David L. Furcolow, Sr.'s Obituary
David L. Furcolow, Sr., 77, of Alliance, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at his home. Born on March 4, 1935 in Alliance where he lived all of his life. He was a 1955 graduate of Alliance High School and attended Ohio University and Kent State University. Mr. Furcolow served our country in the U. S. Army Reserves for 35 years and had achieved the highest rank of a non-commissioned officer (NCO) as Command Sergeant Major upon retiring on December 3, 1992. He entered the Reserves on December 4, 1957 in Alliance with the 3/92 Field Artillery, 8" self-propelled Howitzer Battalion. Among his achievements, he was the first soldier in the history of the battalion to work his way to the top NCO position without a break in service. He received the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the St. Barbara s Award (patron saint of the artillery) for his outstanding knowledge of artillery. Furcolow spent his last three years of service with the 169th Combat Support Group in Warrensville, Ohio, where he served as Senior NCO over 1400 troops, four units of which were activated for Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #558 and the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Board of Directors. Mr. Furcolow was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #540, where he was employed as a construction electrician. He had recently received a 55 year service pin. He volunteered his time as head football coach for Regina Coeli / St. Joseph School for 28 years. He also spent a year assisting Marlington Middle School football team. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 467, the V.F.W. Post #1036, the American Legion Post #76 of Sebring and the Dante Alighieri Society. In his past-time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling, but especially loved spending time with his family and beating Aunt Jan at marbles. Survivors include his wife, Sandra K. (Yendrich) Furcolow, whom he married on March 4, 1971; his children, David L. Furcolow, Jr. of Alliance, Michelle L. Kelleher of Alliance, Michael L. Furcolow of Jackson Twp and Matthew L. Furcolow of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren, Tyler Kelleher, Garrett Hershberger, Logan K. Furcolow and Drew Furcolow; a brother, Dr. James P. Furcolow of Orange, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his step-son, John Michael Reith; his parents, Francis and Esther (Williams) Furcolow; and a brother, Edward Furcolow. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Matthew M. Mankowski as celebrant. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, 1000 S. Union Avenue, Alliance, Ohio 44601.
