Betty K. Onyett's Obituary
Betty K. Onyett, 72, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009. Born October 15, 1936 in Evansville, Indiana, Betty moved to Alliance with her family in 1950. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1954 and received her Bachelor's Degree from Mount Union College, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She later earned her Master's Degree in Elementary Education and studied for her Ph.D. at The University of Akron. Ms. Onyett (a.k.a. Mrs. Harlan) taught in the Alliance Public Schools, retiring in 1990. Betty's many passions included family and friends, the fine arts, nature, and spiritual studies. She was an author, poet, musician, and was active in many area organizations, including the Alliance Shade Tree Commission, the Alliance Symphony Board, the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, and the Ohio Poetry Association. Betty was also a member of the Dulci-More Folk Musicians and co-founder of the Youthful Chamber Orchestra. She will be forever remembered for her overflowing daily schedule book and her lively "Music In Paris (Ohio)" parties. Betty was preceded in death by her father Clyde Onyett, a former United Methodist Minister and Professor at Mount Union College, and her mother Mildred Onyett, a teacher and musician. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn (Michael) Butcher of Hartville; two grandsons, Jesse Butcher of Hartville and David Butcher of Alliance; a sister Lee Louise Love of Boulder, CO; a nephew Alexander (Veronica) Love; other relatives and many friends. A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Union Ave. United Methodist Church in Alliance, OH. Friends may call at 2 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. Cremation has taken place.
