William E. Chambers' Obituary
William E. Chambers, 88, of Alliance, died on Wednesday, November 05, 2003, at 1:05 a.m. at Community Care Center. Born in Kensington on October 26, 1915, he lived in Alliance since 1951 and retired as Chief Inspector of Quality Control at Alliance Manufacturing. Retired Lt. Colonel Chambers completed 34 years of active and reserve service with the US Army serving in World War II in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Central Europe; American Theater Ribbon with one Battle Star; Germany Occupation Medal; and the Army Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 166. Mr. Chambers was also a member of the First Christian Church, the Mason Conrad Lodge 271, and was a 32nd Degree Mason, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Canton. He is survived by two step-granddaughters, Robin Walker of Alliance and Beth Murphy of Cuyahoga Falls; two step-grandsons, Thomas Smith of Louisville and Michael Smith of Wooster; 11 step-great-grandchildren; three half-sisters, Lucille Lohman of Salinesville, Ruth Dillon of Columbiana, and Wanda Grunder of Minerva; half-brother, David Oyer of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy L. (Daugherty) Chambers on Sept. 24, 2003 (they were married on Jan. 31, 1951); a step-son, Tom C. Smith; his parents, William Harrison and Belle (Risden) Chambers Oyer; a half-sister, Leona Oyer; and a half-brother, Robert J. Oyer. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Friday, November 7, 2003, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Craig Jones officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
