Although we lived far away, we always looked forward to coming to see you in Ohio the “next” time…

I can remember the weekly Thursday night cut throat euchre games. Every Thursday, without fail, Tom would stop at my parents on his way home from work for the rousing and oh so serious games of euchre. We were permitted to watch as long as we didn't kibbutz or incessantly chatter. I was given the privilege of supplying (reimbursed by them) and serving the snacks which included peanuts, pretzels, potato chips to be eaten during the game and blind robins, limburger cheese, a big onion, dill pickles, brown seeded mustard and crackers. After the euchre games were done Tom and my dad would eat the smelly cheese and have three or four games of liars poker. A running total of scores was kept for the euchre games and every year a few weeks before Christmas Tom and Marie and my parents Jim and Helen Green would go to Benders or Four Seasons or Top of the Hill restaurant and the one with the lowest score would pick up the tab. This get together started in the 1970's. I also remember Tom or my brother Jim or Francis (Smoky) reciting a poem from memory. My favorites were "The Lure of the Tropics (Down and Out)" and "The Face on the Barroom Floor." We were captivated and at the end gave vigorous applause. So many memories......Tom's laughter and beacon of light philosophy of life will be greatly missed. Our sincerest expressions of sympathy go to Tom's family.
Josie Tony Pat and family, I’m here with David and we were going to come to calling hours today but now think it unwise do to virus. We would like to say Tom was a great brother to our mom, a great uncle to us, and a real credit to this country. Talk about a mechanical mind, no wonder Sears went bankrupt they could only last so long without him!! We’re also glad he was able to get his vote in, there was no way he was going to miss this one. I met Tom Chenevey when he was in his 50’s and I was a young man dating Josie. The first few times that I stopped by Mr Chenevey would offer that I have a beer with him and talk. He would occasionally be sitting at the kitchen table drinking a Wiedemann in those days. Wanting to appear responsible and make a good impression I would decline. In time Josie informed me that her father thought me a wimp because I would not have a beer with him. I took him up on his offer and over a few beers we discussed current events, politics, and the cold war which was a hot topic back then. He was so kind and knowledgeable and I was impressed that he would bother to explain the world to a young punk like me. During one of our many sessions I said something that seemed to impress the man that I found so impressive. He mentioned it to Josie the next day and she told him that those were Springsteen lyrics. Josie and I have had a laugh about that over the years. I never really got the chance to reconnect with Mr. Chenevey although I thought about him and our discussions often. He was humble, charitable, knowledgeable and I enjoyed his company thoroughly. I am sad for his family and friends. He will be missed.

I will always remember dancing with Uncle Tom at a family wedding. I had never experienced partner dancing before, but no worries, Tom could lead anyone on the dance floor (dusted with corn meal for optimal sliding) . Boy, could he dance! Such a kind, helpful and fun soul. Rest in peace.

We are saddened to hear of Tom's passing. He was a fellow parishioner and a good friend while growing up at Sacred Heart of Mary church in Harrisburg. He was also a great friend fo the Green family who we are close with and we would often see Tom visiting and playing cards at the Green family farm. Grandpa as we always called him was a great guy to everyone. He was my father in law and he was there when you needed him. My daughters and I loved our visits for he was the perfect host with his stories and loved your company. We will miss him dearly but now he'll be back with Marie.
