Steve J. Vence's Obituary
Steve J. Vence, 85, of Atwater, died on Monday, June 30, 2003, at 10:20 a.m. at Alliance Community Hospital. Born in Fayette Co., Pa. on May 6, 1918, he had lived in the Atwater area for over 60 years. He was a graduate of Redstone High School in Republic, Pa. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and attended Purdue University. Mr. Vence had been an electrician for all of his life. He had previously worked at B& W Tubular Products for 18 years and had retired from General Motors Terex Plant in Hudson, Ohio after 25 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Annell and Wayne Robertson of Atwater; son Richard Vence of Atwater; son and daughter-in-law James and Sherry Vence of Atwater; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Jeannie Vence of Hartville; son Dan Vence of Atwater; 13 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Martin of Bay Village, Oh., Estelle Durr of Burlingame, Ca., and Sylvia Bodeau of Pi co Rivera, Ca.; a nephew, Duane Durr of Deerfield and several other nephews & nieces. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Nellie (Kososky) Vence; his wife, Helyn (Sapp) Vence on Dec. 18, 2000 (they were married on August 20, 1939); and three sisters, Mary Ann Lavadie, Helen Duff and Annette Sherman. The family will receive friends at the Sharer- Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Donald L. Feicht as celebrant. Burial, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
