Sophia Douglas' Obituary
Sophia Bargides Douglas, 99, of Rockwell, NC and formely of Alliance, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2026.
She was born January 22, 1927, in Alliance, the daughter of Frank and Helen Yeamas Bargides. Sophia was a 1945 graduate of Alliance High School and retired in 1989, after 27 years of employment with Teledyne-Monarch Rubber in Hartville. While employed, she served as Union Secretary of the United Rubber Workers Local 99 for 20 years.
Sophia was an active participant of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Winston-Salem, NC and in more recent years attended Christiana Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC.
She was a member of the Lady Liners Dance Group at Rufty Holmes Senior Center, enjoyed reading, playing cards, and working puzzles, but most of all, loved to spend time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Sophia was preceded in death by many family members, including her brother, sisters, and son-in-law, Frank Strazzulla.
She is survived by her son, Frank Douglas and wife, Teresa, of Alliance; her daughter, Anne Strazzulla of Rockwell, NC; son-in-law, Chuck Ramsey of Salisbury, NC; three granddaughters, Sophia Leece of Birmingham, AL, Andrea Woods and husband, Bryce, of Faith, NC, and Amanda Gordon and husband, Kenneth, of China Grove, NC; eight great-grandchildren, Carson Lee, Brantley Reid, and Abel Sawyer Gordon; Camden Nicole, Gabriel Bryce, and Olivia Anniston Woods; and Leo Ryan and Charleston Andrew Leece.
The family will greet friends and relatives in Rockwell, NC on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM, at Powles Staton Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM conducted by the Reverend Lucas Safrit.
A local Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Alliance City Cemetery.
