Sanford O. "Sandy" Slifkin's Obituary
Sanford O. "Sandy" Slifkin, 90, of Alliance, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. at Alliance Community Care Center. Born on July 29, 1918 in Alliance, he lived in Alliance all of his life. He attended Kent State University and the Ohio State University after graduating from Alliance High School. Mr. Slifkin was a member of Temple Israel in Canton. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot and instructor and flew over "The Hump" between India and China. He was a test pilot for Taylorcraft, was an accomplished pianist, had his own band known as "The San Ford Combo" and retired from S & S Products where he was co-owner. Sandy was a member of the East Central Ohio Pilot s Association (ECOPA), a charter member of the Taylorcraft Flying Club and instructor, and was a flight inspector for the FAA. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 166, the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce, the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and was a member and past president of the Alliance Lions Club. He is survived by five children, Barbara (Ron) Devies of Marlboro, Philip (JoElyn) Slifkin of Moon Twp, PA, David Slifkin of Eugene, OR, Nancy Slifkin of Alliance and Patti (David) Stanley of Atwater; five grandchildren, Mike Lewis, Adam Dike, Andrew Slifkin, Kyle Devies and Kathryn Dike; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife, Kathryn (Sefert) Slifkin, on July 17, 1997, whom he married on August 2, 1949; his parents, Harry and Hattie (Cohen) Slifkin; and two sisters, Rosalind Rosenbaum and Freda Columbus. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The Alliance Lions Club Service will begin at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Friday, April 3, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. with Rabbi Leah Herz of Temple Israel officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
