Ruth L. Shonk's Obituary
Ruth Laura (Krisher) Shonk, 88, of Alliance, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 2:50 a.m. at her home. Born on March 25, 1924 in Massillon, OH, she attended Blue Clay one room school, and Massillon Public Schools. Ruth was a 1942 graduate of Washington High School in Massillon. Ruth lived in Alliance since 1950 and was a member of First Immanuel United Church of Christ for over 50 years. She sang in the choir, served on various positions in the Women s Guild and Fellowship Committee. Mrs. Shonk was employed at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Massillon as the clerk ticket agent. She retired in 1983 from Alliance Public Schools, where she was employed as a cafeteria cook for 26 years at both Morgan Elementary School and Alliance High School. On retiring, she was instrumental in organizing the "Retired Cooks Club" from Alliance High School. In her past-time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, crafts, cross word puzzles and visits with family and friends. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Sherry Shonk of Biloxi, MS; two grandchildren, Wendy (Mike) Lally of Biloxi, MS and Brad Shonk of Biloxi, MS; a great-granddaughter, Adrienne Lally; a sister, Ethel Nicewander of Canton; a brother, Harold Krisher of Lafayette, IN; and nieces, Janet Harkness, Lois (John) Taylor, Shirley (William) Nagel, Doris (Robert) Oxford and Jane (Richard) Kramek and nephews, Ralph (Sue) Boswell, Harold (Jane) Krisher, Jr., Mark (Paulette) Krisher and Kenny Krisher; a special caregiver, Lori (Mike) Shonk; and several cousins & many friends. Preceding her in death was her husband, William H. "Hank" Shonk on July 13, 2000, whom she married on December 1, 1945; a son, Richard Shonk on February 23,1999; her parents, Earl A. and Laura E. (Porr) Krisher; a sister, Hazel (Maurice) Boswell; and two brothers, Willard (Berdine) Krisher and Howard (Violet) Krisher. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home in Alliance on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Her funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Neil Mann officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit, OH. Arrangements are by the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, 1000 S. Union Avenue, Alliance, Ohio 44601.
