Robert A. Lower, Sr.'s Obituary
Robert Allen "Commander" Lower, Sr., 89, of Alliance, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 4:15 p.m., at Alliance Community Hospital. Born in Alliance on July 31, 1920, he lived in Alliance all his life. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theatre, serving on the U.S.S. Handsford. Robert had previously worked for B & W Rush Street and retired from Modern LP Gas as a driver. Mr. Lower was a life member of the VFW Post 1036 where he was post commander for 18 years, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 166 and the BPO Elks #467. He was an avid area sports fan. He enjoyed working outside, gardening, trains and anything to do with veteran affairs. Robert enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas. He found great joy in Christmas shopping for his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Irene (Szasz) Koch-Lower; a daughter, Barbara A. (Lee) Ramsayer of Alliance; a son, Robert A. (Patricia) Lower, Jr. of Alliance; two step-sons, William L. Koch of Alliance and Robert H. (Barbara) Koch of Alliance; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his first wife of 28 years, Twila (Grall) Lower, on November 27, 1970; his father, Allen O. Lower; his mother, Virginia M. (Bishong) Lower; his step-mother, Chrystal (Boyce) Lower; a sister, Alberta Wiseman; a brother, Charles Lower; and a half-sister, Lois Duckworth. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Friday, December 18, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Alliance City Cemetery.
