Robert Eugene Clayton's Obituary
Robert Eugene "Bob" Clayton, 80, of Alliance, passed away with his family at his side on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 10:34 am at Brookdale Senior Living of Wooster.
Born on June 23, 1936 in Alliance, the first child of David and Fern Elanor (Connolly) Clayton, he lived in Alliance for all of his life, moving to Wooster within the past two years.
A graduate of Alliance High School, he attended Stark Tech and Ohio State Fire Academy.
During high school and for a time afterwards he was employed at the A&P Food Store. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, and when discharged his rank was Specialist 5.
On June 9, 1963, he married LulaBelle "Lou" Collins in the Sanctuary of Christ United Methodist Church. Since his wife-to-be had worked there as Minister’s Secretary and had served at that time for three ministers, all three officiated at the wedding.
Sports especially of interest to Bob were fast pitch softball, where he played for several area championship teams. He enjoyed tennis, golf and bowling also. He especially loved attending his granddaughter’s sporting events.
Bob served the Alliance Fire Department for 27 years and retired with the rank of Captain. He was named Fire Fighter of the Year in 1991.
As a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church, he served as an Usher and was active on many committees and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Staff-Parish Relations Committees. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1036 Alliance, American Legion, Post 166 Alliance, B.P.O. Elks, Lodge #467 Alliance, and the Alliance Lion's Club.
Survivors include his wife, LulaBelle "Lou" (Collins) Clayton; daughter and son-in-law, DeAnne & Jeffrey Herald of Wooster; granddaughter, Sarah Lynn Herald of Wooster; brother, Donald Clayton of Alliance; sister-in-law, Rose (Carpenter) Clayton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; infant sister, Sandra Clayton; and his brother, Kenneth Lee Clayton.
A Last Alarm Service will held at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Tues., April 25 at 12 Noon. The family will receive friends from 12 -1 pm at the funeral home. His Funeral Service will begin at 1 pm. Burial, with military honors, will immediately follow at Highland Memorial Park.
