Melvin E. Young Jr.'s Obituary
Melvin E. Young, Jr., 80, of Alliance, passed away following a lengthy illness on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 5:15 am at Mercy Medical Center.
Born on September 27, 1942 in Alliance, to Melvin E. and Elizabeth (Ottle) Young, he lived in Alliance all of his life.
A 1961 graduate of Alliance High School, he was employed by Ohio Edison as a substation maintenance supervisor for 34 years, retiring in 2002.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving our country on the USS Mitscher and was a member of American Legion Post #166.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served as an Eucharistic Minister.
Mel was a life member of Knights of Columbus Council #558 and a Past Grand Knight. He was also a life member of the B.P.O. Elks #467 and a Past Exalted Ruler.
He served with the Ohio District Boy Scouts and was also a troop leader.
Mel enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working, yard work and rosary making. He was an avid fan of Mt. Union Football.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Rufo) Young, whom he married on April 30, 1966; two sons, Mark Young of Alliance and Michael Young of Cuyahoga Falls; a brother, Jerry A. (Carol) Young of Louisville; three sisters, Debbie A. (Ben) Frustos of Alliance, Denise A. (Chuck) Biery of Salem and Lisa A. (David) Roberts of Canal Fulton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was his father, Melvin E. Young, Sr., his mother, Elizabeth Young-Gulling and his step-father, Harold W. Gulling.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 9:00 am - 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am. Burial, with military honors, will take place on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 2:15 pm at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
