McClellan W. "Mac" Best's Obituary
McClellan W, "Mac" Best, 88, of North Canton, died on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 1:45 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Community in North Canton. He was born on October 10, 1923 in Alliance, and lived in Alliance most of his life. A graduate of Alliance High School, he served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a crew member on a B-29 Superfortress. He had received the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He had been a member of Regina Coeli Catholic Church of Alliance and currently of St. Paul Catholic Church of North Canton. Mr. Best had previously been employed for many years as the Retail Sales Manager at Alliance Hardware and later retired from Robertson Heating & Cooling as a Cost Estimator. As a long-time member of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, golf was his main passion. He was a volunteer starter at Sleepy Hollow and was a caddy as a young boy at Alliance Country Club. He was proud of having scored two holes-in-one during his golfing years. He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Patricia Best and her spouse, Thomas Ray of State College, PA; a daughter, Michele Best of Beltsville, MD; a son, Lawrence Best and his spouse, Karen Best of North Canton, OH; three grandchildren, Matthew Wade, Nathan Best and Andrew Best; two great grandchildren, Daesia and Cecilia Wade; three sisters, Kay Grewe of Alliance, Barbara Santschi of Alliance and Betty Weigand of CA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife and high school sweetheart, Jacqueline Marie (Simes) Best on December 10, 1998, whom he married on January 23, 1943; also his parents, McClellan and Elizabeth Tullis Best, Sr., and his father-in-law, George W. Simes. Mac Best, a member of "the greatest generation" served his country, practiced his faith, and above all, loved his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he shared his love of golf with his children and grandsons, enjoyed attending their many activities, and was, first and foremost, a family man. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on November 23,2011 with the Rev. Fr. Howard Ziemba, Pastor of Regina Coeli Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Alliance.
