Mary Ellen Garrett's Obituary
Mary Ellen was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on June 3, 1937 and passed away peacefully on June 25, 2021 with her husband and daughters by her side. She attended St. Mary’s High School in Clarksburg and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1955 and then attended business college. It was during high school that she met John Garrett, the love of her life. They married on November 22, 1958 and Alliance has been their home since 1961. Their family became complete with the birth of their two daughters, Tina and CiCi.
After graduating from business college, Mary Ellen worked for the Hope Gas Company in Clarksburg, WV. They moved to Alliance, Ohio in 1961 and she began her career at American Steel Foundries. After 32 years of dedicated service, she retired in 1993. She was a member of the St. Joseph Church family in Alliance.
Mary Ellen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend and there was nothing she loved more than spending time with family and friends. When her daughters were young, many laughter filled evenings were spent playing cards and other games and getting together with their many family friends. The highlight of every summer was a family trip to Canada to relax, fish and have more fun. They also enjoyed weekend visits to West Virginia to see family and friends. Mary Ellen developed life-long friendships with some of her co-workers at American Steel and she felt truly blessed by those friendships.
After retirement, Mary Ellen frequently traveled to Columbus, Ohio and Houston, Texas where she could be found cheering for her grandsons at many different sporting events. She was their biggest fan. Every Christmas, she and John traveled to either Columbus or Houston and they enjoyed sharing their holiday traditions and creating new ones. Some of the best memories were made and the most fun was had when she and John and their four grandsons spent time together.
Mary Ellen also enjoyed gardening and volunteering at Rockhill Elementary School. She and John were like grandparents to many others and they cherished the time shared together. They also liked going out to dinner and Sunday morning breakfasts with friends and their overnight trips to Berkholz.
Mary Ellen is preceded in death by her parents Louie and Geraldine Ellis and brother Joby and her in-laws Charles and Lena Garrett. She is survived by her husband John, daughters and spouses, Tina & Michael Latimer and CiCi & Clark Oswald, sisters Virginia Ann Jones and Lois Wolfe, grandsons Chris Latimer, Matt Latimer, Thomas Oswald and Mark (Madison) Oswald, great-grandson Levi Garrett Oswald and many other in-laws, cousins, nephews and nieces. She will also be missed by her closest friends – too many to mention but they know who they are. Mary Ellen was one of the most loving and caring people on earth and she would want all who knew and loved her to cherish the many memories.
