Mary Florence “Honey” Bernart
Mary Florence (Collins) Bernart, 94, of Alliance, passed away peacefully at home with her family on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.
Born on December 23, 1920 in Youngstown, Ohio to Earl and Mary (Meenachan) Collins, she was a 1938 graduate of East High School in Youngstown, OH. She lived in Alliance for most of her life.
A veteran of WWII, she served our country as a Nurse in the U.S. Army and was also an Aircraft Riveter.
Mary was an active member of St. Joseph Church in Alliance, where she volunteered with many church and school projects. She was also a Past Vice-President of the church guild; member of "The Mother of Twins Club"; and was familiar with elderly care through various employments at nursing homes and served as a home health aide.
She was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #467 Ladies Auxiliary, where she held various positions, and was named a past "Elks Women of the Year".
She enjoyed going to the Alliance Senior Citizens Center playing cards and visiting with friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret (Bob) Burns of Alliance, OH, Louise (Bo) Earley of Greer, SC; three sons, Michael (Ginny) Bernart of Tulsa, OK, Patrick (Kathy) Bernart of Alameda, CA, Rene Francis (Leslie) Bernart of North Canton, OH; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Myers of Youngstown, OH, Lois D'Amico of Youngstown, OH; a brother, Pat (Patty) Dixon of Youngstown, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Gus Bernart, whom she married on January 12, 1946 and died on March 14, 1996; her daughter, Connie Sparks; parents, Earl and Mary Collins; sister, Donna Prochak; and six brothers, Thomas, Edward, Raymond, Earl Jr., Jack and Joe Collins.
The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am. Burial, with military honors, will immediately follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
