Mary Irene Akins' Obituary
Mary Irene Akins, 85, of Alliance, died on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at 6:40 p.m. surrounded by her family at her home. She was born on April 14, 1922 in East Liverpool, Ohio, where she graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1940. Mary moved to Alliance to attend Mt. Union College and graduated in 1944, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She later received her Masters Degree in Special Education at Kent State University. Making Alliance her home since she was in college, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mrs. Akins retired from Alliance Public Schools after teaching at the former Stanton Jr. High School for many years. She was a member of the Alliance Area Teachers Association. Mary enjoyed volunteering at Alliance Community Hospital for over twenty years. Mrs. Akins was an avid fan of her college football team, the Purple Raiders. She was a member of the MUC Century Raiders Club and the MUC Women s Club. She was also a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She was not only an avid football fan, but also enjoyed baseball. And whenever she had an opportunity to travel, she was off. She especially loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren. She leaves behind a daughter, Beth (Robert) Bugara of Alliance; a son, Charles (Judy) Akins of Alliance; a step-daughter, Charlene (Bob) Pilmer of Alliance, six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a special step-granddaughter who had been her care giver, Lacy Turkson; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Akins on January 16, 1990, whom she married on August 3, 1945; a son, Michael W. Akins on June 28, 1991; a grandson, Kevin Pilmer; and her parents, George W. and Marjorie Irene (Thompson) McKee. The family will receive friends at the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald L. Feicht, as celebrant. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
