John R. Schmidt's Obituary
John Robert Schmidt, 90, formerly of Alliance, passed on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 8:20 a.m. at the Columbus Colony Elderly Care Center in Westerville, Ohio. He was born on June 24, 1920 in Akron, OH and lived in Alliance most of his life. He was a graduate of Mullins High School in Colorado. A veteran of World War II, he served our country in the U. S. Army Medical Corps in the Pacific Rim. Mr. Schmidt was a member of Regina Coeli Catholic Church. He retired from the Marlington High School where he was employed as a Custodian. Mr. Schmidt was a Past Master of the Masonic Temple and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #558 and several bowling leagues. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Mike) Helsel of Gahanna, OH; three grandsons, Jon (Dani) and children, Alex, Emmalynn and Jonathan, Ben (Jen) and Andy; step-children, JoAnn (Kenneth) Cope, Loretta Martin, Patricia (Robert) Schwartz, Veronica (Richard) Zink, Kathleen Dalo, Cheryl (Raymond) McCaulley, Gail (Bryan) Andrie, Nancy Fleming; Paul C. (Olivia) Kelly Jr.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his first wife, Evelyn M. (Hunt) Schmidt on Jan. 19, 1984, whom he married on Nov. 24, 1951; his second wife, Josephine T. (Kelly) Schmidt on Nov. 12, 2003, whom he married on Oct. 28, 1994; his parents, George and Appolonia (Burgardt) Schmidt; a sister, Irene Dreiling; and a brother, George L. Schmidt. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 from 7- 9 p.m. A K of C Service will be held at 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Regina Coeli Catholic Church on Wed, June 1, 2011, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Seifert, as celebrant. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
