Jerry C. Eckert's Obituary
Jerry C. Eckert, 66, of Beloit, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family, and his loving companion and devoted dog, "Peaches", following a couragous battle with Lung Cancer. Born on March 28, 1946 in Alliance, he remained in the Alliance area all of his life. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School and Louisville High School. He was a member of First Church of God in Alliance. Jerry retired as Chief of Police of the Smith Township Police Department in 1992. After graduating from the Canton Police Academy, he began his Police career in 1970 as a Patrolman with the Sebring Police Department. He joined Smith Township in 1977, served as Sergeant in 1980 and promoted to Chief in 1983. He was also a member of the Ohio F.O.P. He was a previous "Officer of the Year Award" recipient from the Alliance Exchange Club. In his past-time, he enjoyed fishing, but especially spending time with his family and friends. He was always there to lend a helping hand for anyone who needed support. Survivors include his wife, Chris (Somogy) Eckert, whom he married on March 16, 1996; a son, Shawn Eckert of Las Vegas, NV; a grandson, Justin; step-children, Shanon Longaberger, Brent, Jeff and Derrick (Shannon) Loy; 9 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Paul) McCarthy of Alliance and Barbara (Lacivita) of Alliance; three brothers, Larry (Eunice) Eckert of IN, Gary Eckert of Salem and Earl (Tammy) Eckert of Sebring; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Cyril and Charlene (Potter) Eckert; a brother, Mark Eckert; two brothers-in-law, Jim Lacivita and Ray Somogy; and an aunt, Gertrude Bowden. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. His funeral service will be held at First Church of God on Friday, Dec. 7, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Larry Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Arrangements are by the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, 1000 S. Union Avenue, Alliance, Ohio 44601.
