Jean Shaffer's Obituary
Jean Hopkins Shaffer, 94, of Alliance, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born July 3, 1921, at the family home on South Rockhill Avenue in Alliance, the daughter of James B. and Flo Fern Hopkins. She was a lifelong resident of Alliance and a member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church for 85 years. She was a 1939 graduate of Alliance High School. She married Lt. Col. Robert J. Shaffer, USAF, Ret., on May 23, 1942. He passed away in 1972.
She was employed as a salesperson and model at Spring-Hollsworth Co. in downtown Alliance from 1940-43. After raising her sons, she became director of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church nursery school, retiring in 1972. She later worked at Copeland Oaks as a patient transportation assistant.
She was active in the Alliance Church Women United and Union Avenue United Methodist Church women's circles. She had a passion for the game of bridge and was known as an outstanding player. She also enjoyed travel, theatre and spending time with her extended family.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph Hopkins Shaffer of Bozeman, Montana, and Mark Alan Shaffer of Alliance; three granddaughters; a great-grandson; and 15 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
