Herbert Albert Woods Sr., 89, was welcomed to his heavenly home by his forever love Phyllis (Reynolds) Woods on Friday, February 19, 2016. Other family members who had gone before him include his siblings, James E. “Bud” Woods Jr, John Woods, Luella “Marie” Harding, Martha Elceser and Edith Theaker.
Herbert leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Gary Hunt; his son and daughter-in-law, Herbert Jr and Ginger Woods; grandchildren, Rebecca (Jeff) Dietrich, Leslie (Atlee) Haynam, and Matt (Megan) Hunt; great-grandchildren, Lillian and Lief Dietrich, Sydney, Bailey and Axton Haynam, and Garrett and Gavin Hunt. He is also survived by his only remaining sibling Lester (Dorothy) Woods.
Born in Bridgeport, OH, he was the son of James Edward and Luella (Darrah) Woods.
Following his military service in Italy during WWII he came home to Alliance and married his sweetheart Phyllis Reynolds Woods. They lived many years in Atwater where they attended First Baptist Church before becoming members of the Liberty Bible Church. After moving to Alliance they attended a senior Sunday school class that they loved at the Chapel In Marlboro.
He worked at the Alliance Ware for more than 20 years. Herb was also employed by Alliance Machine and General Electric (Twinsburg).
Herb was an avid coon hunter, and spent many nights in the woods with his hounds, friends and brothers. He went on to teach his grandson Matt how to hunt turkey and squirrel, loved wood working in his shop and also spent countless hours in his vegetable gardens. Grandpa could fix anything. He will be remembered as a hard-working, honest, family man and a great neighbor.
The family would like to extend their sincere love and appreciation for the phenomenal staff and volunteers of the Alliance Hospice especially Kathy, Dixee, Kendra, Bev & Bambi. They would also like to note the amazing care that Herb received from the Department of Veterans Affairs in both Canton and Cleveland.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home. His Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, with Pastor Ron Lanham, officiating. Burial, with military honors, will immediately follow at Atwater Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Alliance Hospice 2461 W. State St., Suite E Alliance, OH 44601.
