George Popa's Obituary
George Popa, 78, of Alliance, died on Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at 7:35 p.m. at the Canterbury Villa of Alliance. A lifelong resident of Alliance, George was born on January 9, 1928. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Popa served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Valley Forge and also served in the Merchant Marines. George retired from T & W Forge where he was employed for 34 years. He was a member of the T & W Retirees Club, the Alliance Senior Center, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1036. George is survived by his wife, Betty (Grossenbacher) Popa whom he married on January 3, 1953; a daughter, Michelle L. (Jeff) Dillon of Alliance; a son, George M. (Paula) Popa of Alliance; five grandchildren, Greg Dillon, Anthony J. Dillon, Jennifer Rose Popa, Angela (Russ) Colley, and Krista Popa; a sister, Betty Carlisle Rutter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Emil Popa; his parents, John and Eleanor (Posta) Popa; a sister, Mary Gorrell; and four brothers, John Popa, Julius Popa, Nick Popa, and Emil Popa. Funeral services will be held at the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Monday, October 2, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph A. Peters officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
