Franklin I. Triplett, Jr.'s Obituary
Franklin I. Triplett, Jr., 85, of Alliance, a former resident of San Diego, California, died at McCrea Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Alliance, on March 26, 2007, after an extended illness. Born on December 10, 1921 in Mullins, South Carolina, Mr. Triplett served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bunker Hill in the Pacific during World War II, and he participated in combat operations in the Solomon and Marshall Islands, the Marianas and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, as well as in Leyte and Saipan and Tinian. He subsequently served on the U.S.S. Intrepid and the U.S.S. Essex in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. His last overseas posting was with the NATO detachment at Valletta, Malta. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Triplett became a Human Resources administrator in the municipal government of San Diego, ultimately retiring from that job with nearly 15 years of service. Mr. Triplett married the former Effie Gemalas of Providence, Rhode Island, and they enjoyed sixty years of marriage together until Effie Triplett's death in 2003. Mr. Triplett was an avid golfer, and he held numerous golfing awards from golfing associations and clubs in California, Rhode Island and Malta. He was the base champion at most of the navy bases where he was stationed in the world. Mr. Triplett is survived by a son, Franklin I. Triplett, III, of Alliance; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Hattie (Sexton) Triplett. Private funeral services will be held in Block Island, Rhode Island. There will be no calling hours.
