Doris J. Whinery's Obituary
Doris Jeanne Whinery, 86, of Alliance passed quietly from this life on June 21st at the McCrea Manor. Jeanne was born February 8, 1925 in Alliance, the only child of the late Bernice Henderson and Earl Richard Wells. In June, 1944 she married George Bartges Whinery of Salem, who in 1943 had been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, and whom she lost to cancer in 1986. She is survived by her son, Richard (Laura) Whinery of Chillicothe; her granddaughter, Megan (Brent) Stypczynski of Columbus; her great-grandson, Dylan Richard Stypczynski, who was born in February of this year; and her special friends Carol, Art and Janet. Jeanne graduated from Alliance High School in January, 1943. Shortly thereafter she went to work as an operator for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. Later she transferred to the company s Engineering Office in Canton and was employed there until her retirement in1982. Following retirement she became highly involved with the Telephone Pioneers of America and served as President of the Canton District Chapter. Jeanne cared very deeply for all animals, but she especially loved cats. All her life she provided shelter and nurturance for many stray and homeless cats and kittens. Abby, her dear companion of 18 years, who moved with her to assisted living following Jeanne s stroke in 2001, now lives in Chillicothe with Richard and Laura. Jeanne was a long time member of the Humane Society of Stark County. Her love of nature and flowers made her a dedicated supporter of the Wilderness Center in Wilmot, Ohio. Following her retirement and then George s death, Jeanne remained quite active. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 50 Auxiliary, and she performed over 1,100 hours of service at the Alliance Community Hospital, earning its Volunteer of the Month Award. In her mid-sixties she began taking flying lessons and would incorporate some of these lessons into trips to Chillicothe to visit her family. A graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Park on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11:30 a.m.
