Chet Charlton's Obituary
Chet Charlton, 79, of 2400 Brayton St., Alliance, died on Friday, May 27, 2005, at 10:10 p.m. at Altercare of Alliance. He had been in ill health after suffering several strokes, open heart surgery and numerous cancers. Born in Wooster, Ohio, on May 31, 1925, he lived in the Alliance area most of his life. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he was a graduate of Alliance High School and had attended Mount Union College. He had served during World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps, 9th Marines and 3rd Marine Division and was deployed to the South Pacific and Guam. He was present at the battle of Iwo Jima when our flag was raised. After his discharge, he joined the Alliance National Guard, Battery C, 987th Field Artillery Battalion as a Master Sergeant and was deployed to Korea for thirteen months. Mr. Charlton was a Sales Representative for the Robertson Supply Company and retired after 42 years of service. After his retirement, he was a greeter at Wal-Mart. Chet enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and making wine. He is survived by his wife, Martha R. (Stranges) Charlton, whom he married on July 31, 1948; a son, Mickey (Margaret) Charlton of Alliance; two daughters, Deborah Walker of Massillon and Kathy Furgiuele of Damascus; one granddaughter, Rachel Walker of Massillon (Papa s own "Miss America"); two sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Alliance and Phyllis Ciatu of Scottsdale, AZ.; a brother, James (Patricia) Charlton of Louisville; and several nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. and Bessie (Mohr) Charlton. The family will receive friends at the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Donald L. Feicht and the Rev. Paul J. Tobin, con-celebrating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
