Charles D. Kannal's Obituary
Charles D. Kannal, 96, of Alliance, passed away on December 18, 2013 at 11:02 a.m. at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. Born on March 14, 1917 in Kent, Ohio, he lived in the Alliance area since 1935, and was a graduate of Lake High School. A veteran of World War II, he served our country in the U. S. Army, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He received a Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action on March 23, 1943 in Tunisia. He also was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. Mr. Kannal was a life member of the D.A.V. Chapter #50 and a life member of the V.F.W. Post #166. He was also a member of the Alliance Senior Citizens Center. He retired in 1980 from Goodyear Aero Space in Akron, where he was employed as a machinist. In his past-time, he enjoyed gardening and carpentry. The family wishes to offer their sincere thanks to the staff , nurses, doctors, and the many volunteers at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky and the Stein Hospice of Sandusky for their kindness and care given to Charles. Survivors include his two daughters, Connie (Dennis) Marriner of Alliance and Patti (Larry) Lacher of Alliance; three grandchildren, Brett (Elizabeth) Marriner, Lindsay (Mark) Kaneas and Chad (Nancy) Lacher; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Owen and Mason Marriner, and Tessa and Samuel Lacher. Preceding him in death was his wife, Phyllis M. (Hoover) Kannal, on November 30, 2001, whom he married on February 5, 1945; a son, Charles D. Kannal, Jr.; a great-grandson, Henry J. Lacher; his parents, Frank and Mabel (Kyser) Kannal; a sister, Esther Espshied; and two brothers, Ellis L. Kannal and Arthur R. Kannal. A private family service was held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 with Rev. Matthew J. Mankowski, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating. Interment, with military honors was provided by the Active Army Honor Guard and the Salem AmVets, at Marlboro Cemetery.
