Betty M. Scaia's Obituary
Betty (Ray) Scaia, 94, of Alliance, went home to be with the Lord on December 22, 2019 at the House of Loreto in Canton.
She was the daughter of John and Mary Kate (Farrell) Ray. Born on April 18, 1925, she was a graduate of St. Joseph School in 1939, Alliance High School in June, 1943, and graduated from Alliance Business College in 1950.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Mary Beth Zeni of Lakewood, Ohio, Matthew Brian Zeni of Alliance, and Thomas Gerard Farrell of Alliance.
Betty served her church faithfully as leader of the St. Joseph's Rosary Group, Division Coordinator for Perpetual Adoration at St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the Infant of Prague Group, secretary for Funtastics (Senior Group) for several years, a member of the former Women’s Guild at her church and Regina Coeli. She served as past president of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2007 and Lady of the Year in 2009 by the Knights of Columbus. She also served as past president and treasurer of the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Tau Omega Sorority and was the last president of Mended Hearts, Chapter 33 in Alliance, Ohio.
During the war, Betty was employed by Taylorcraft Aviation Corporation. She was also Miss Taylorcraft of 1946. She was last employed as a secretary at Alliance Machine Company, and was called back to work in 1973. She worked part-time at St. Joseph Rectory as secretary.
Betty was a former member of Alliance Right to Life, having served as vice-president and secretary. She was also a member of the Stark County Right to Life Educational Foundation, Stark County Right to Life, the Ohio Right to Life and National Right to Life. She also organized Life Chain in Alliance, and went to Washington, DC numerous times to protest the killing of innocent babies.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall; her parents; her brother, John Patrick Ray; and her sister, Mrs. Vincent Barrord. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 26, 2019 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Very Rev. Canon Matthew J. Mankowski, of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, as celebrant. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
