Bernice May Hilliard's Obituary
Bernice May (Sommers) Hilliard, 96, of Alliance, died on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 4:50 a.m. at Canterbury Villa of Alliance. Born on April 16, 1917 in Salem, OH, she attended Salem High School. Bernice was a member of the First Christian Church in Kensington and had lived in Kensington for most of her life. She had been a foster mother for a number of years. In her past-time, she enjoyed going to auctions with her husband, Clyde. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Bergman of Kensington, OH and Janice Hershberger of Commerce, GA; four sons, Allen (Faye) Hilliard of Hanoverton, OH, David (Victoria) Hilliard of Jacksonville, FL, Mervin (Gayle) Hilliard of Salem, OH and Irven Hilliard of Kensington, OH; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Jerino and Ruth Chandler, both of South Carolina; a brother, Joseph Sommers; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Clyde Hilliard on Dec. 26, 2006, whom she married on April 18, 1936; a daughter, Gwendolyn Sanson; her parents, John and Pearl (McConnor) Sommers; sisters, Thelma Dales, Eileen Roof, Irene Sommers and Martha Potts; and brothers, John Sommers, Jr., Emmet Sommers, Charles Sommers, Ralph Sommers, Samuel Sommers and William Sommers. A Memorial Service will be held at First Christian Church of Kensington on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Gene Hydrick officiating. Interment will take place at Moultrie Chapel Cemetery in New Franklin, OH.
