Bernard W. "Bernie" Taylor's Obituary
Bernard W. "Bernie" Taylor, 94, of Alliance, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 2:15 p.m. at Alliance Community Hospital, following a brief illness. Born on November 2, 1914 in Salem, Ohio, he was a graduate of Wellsville High School. He moved to Alliance in 1940. He served in the U. S. Army. He was a life member of the D.A.V., where he was a Past Commander and current Chaplain. A member of the First Christian Church for over 60 years, he served his church in various capacities: a past Elder, former Sunday School Teacher, the Crusaders Sunday School Class, the Senior Disciples, and Clown Ministries. He also was a member of the Alliance Council of Churches. He retired in 1979 from the United States Post Office, where he was employed as a Letter Carrier, after 32 years of service. He was a life member of the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers). Mr. Taylor helped form "Lenten Lunches" 32 years ago, which is still going on strong to date. He was a member of the Mayor s Commission on Aging for 28 years. He was a member of the Alliance Area Senior Citizens Center and was their 2004 recipient of the Senior Citizen of the Year Award. He was also a member of AARP #2630. A 50 year member of Alliance Council #261 of United Commercial Travelers, he was a Past Senior Counselor and their current Chaplain. Bernie was a member of the Alliance Area Republicans Club for many years and in his past-time, he enjoyed working Bingo at the Alliance Senior Center and at the D.A.V. He also was an avid cookie baker, cartoonist and water colorist. He is survived by three daughters, Haven (Edwin) Ackley of Alliance, Terri (Richard) Hoff of Summerville, GA and Janis (G. Thomas) Williams of Lexington, OH; a grandson, Nathan (Jennifer) Hoff of Summerville, GA; two granddaughters, Andi Hoff (Kelvin Barrett) of Summerville, GA, and Carrie (Ryan) Shrout of Columbus, OH; a great-granddaughter, Clarissa Barrett of Summerville, GA; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Taylor of Salem, Ohio and Betty Martin of York, PA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his wife, Mildred Maud (Martin) Taylor on June 6, 1991, whom he married on August 23, 1941; his father, Bernard B. Taylor; his mother, Maud (Willard) Rummell Taylor; two sisters, Geraldine Taylor and Mary Reinier; and three brothers, Eugene Rummell, Earlin Taylor and Dewalt Taylor. The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Monday, April 20, 2009, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., and also from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Christian Church. D.A.V. services at 5:45 p.m. on Monday. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church, 1141 W. Beech St., Alliance, on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Pamela Bruno, officiating, with Sue DeHoff and Pastor Bobby Williams assisting. Entombment, with military honors provided by the Alliance American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1036, will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
