Alice E. Barber's Obituary
Alice E. Barber, 90, of Alliance, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the Intensive Care Unit of Alliance Community Hospital. Born on January 8, 1918 in Sebring, she lived in Alliance all of her life. Alice was a life-long member and served in various ladies organizations of the Alliance Masonic Lodge and held offices in the Eastern Star and served as Royal Matron of the Amaranth. She was the past president of the Toast Mistress and enjoyed traveling all over the world including the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. Interested in historical preservation, Alice supported the Alliance Historical Society. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and flowers. Alice will be dearly missed by her family and will be remembered as a kind and caring person and a very loving mother. Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn A. Woolf of Pittsburgh, PA; four sons, Richard T. Barber of Nags Head, NC, John C. Barber of Vacaville, CA; Bruce A. and his wife Pixie Barber of Alliance, Brian L. Barber of San Leandro, CA; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Leah Fern Miller of Sebring; several nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Evelyn Elliott of Alliance. Preceding her in death was her husband, Richard Arthur Barber on December 13, 2000, whom she married on November 18, 1937; her parents, Cecil and Bertha (Shipman) Beckett; a sister, Martha (Beckett) Dicko; and three brothers, John, Calvin and Charles Richard Beckett. The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate and loving care given by the doctors, nurses and staffs of the PCU and ICU; a tribute to their professions and the Alliance Community Hospital. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 11:45 a.m. with calling hours from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery in Sebring.
