Albert M. DeStephen 's Obituary
Albert M. DeStephen, 97, formerly of Alliance, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at 11:30 am at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio.
Born on February 17, 1920 in Canton, Ohio to Anthony and Jennie (DiGiacomo) DeStephen, Al was a 1937 graduate of McKinley High School in Canton. He lived in Alliance for most of his life, having recently moved to Cambridge, Ohio.
He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and sang in their choir for more than 15 years, when the Mass was celebrated in Latin.
Albert was first employed at Timken Roller Bearing from 1940-1942. He then served our country with the Army Air Force from 1942-1946. While he was stationed in Sarasota, Florida, he married the former Helen Marie Skivolocke of Alliance on September 19, 1943. Following his discharge, he began working at B & W Tubular in 1946. Al attained his degree in Mechanical Engineering through International Correspondence Courses. He retired from B&W Tubular Products in 1983 as Superintendent of Welding Mills, after 37 years of service.
Al was a life member of ASME American Society of Mechanical Engineers, life member AIST Association of Iron & Steel Technology; and a life member American Legion, Post 166 Alliance, OH.
He was a Past President of Toastmasters of Alliance; and was a former member of the Alliance Lion's Club, former member of the U.C.T. (United Commercial Travelers) and had been an advisor to Junior Achievement for several years.
Al enjoyed music, photography, golf, movies, computers, gadgetry and all things Italian.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Helen M. (Skivolocke) DeStephen; a daughter, Norma Longinie of New Concord, OH; granddaughter, Lori (Richard) Bubenchik of Norwich, OH; great-granddaughter, Lexi Bubenchik, currently a student at Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, TX; two sisters, Norma Jean "Dolly" Sousaris of Canton, OH, JoAnne DeStephen of Canton, OH; two sister-in-laws, Mable DeStephen of Canton and Joan DeStephen of NJ; several nieces and nephews: and his grand fur-baby, Bella.
Preceding him in death were his parents Anthony and Jennie DeStephen; son-in-law, John Longinie, (2016); two sisters, Claire (Paul) Guarino, Gloria (Merle) Pack; five brothers, Anthony DeStephen, Jr., Arthur (Lucille) DeStephen, Rudy (Maggie) DeStephen, Edward DeStephen, Anthony "Pucci" DeStephen.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 1:30 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Matthew J. Mankowski, as celebrant.
Al will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge, Ohio on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 1:30 pm.
